About Gunotsav

Gunotsav is an initiative to bring qualitative improvement in schools education system. It is a comprehensive census base evaluation covering 4 broad areas viz. Scholastic(learning outcomes), Co-scholastic & other areas, Community Participation & Contribution and Availability & Use of Infrastructure. Children from Class-I to IX of Government/Provincialised, Tea Garden Management Schools, Tea Garden Model Schools, Adarsha Vidyalayas, Kasturba Gandhi BalikaVidyalayas (KGBVs) and Residential Schools are covered in Gunotsav. The evaluation is OMR base. 100% schools are evaluated. Schools have been graded on the basis of performance as A+, A, B, C and D.

The area wise weightage of grading of school:

  • Scholastic : 90%
  • Co-scholastic and other areas : 5%
  • Community Participation & Contributions : 5

Infrastructure part is not considered for Grading of School

Hon’ble Minister, Ministers, Hon’ble MLAs, Chief Secretary to the GOA, Senior IAS, IPS and IFS officers, class I & II officers of the state are engaged as External Evaluator in the exercise. External evaluators need to present in the assigned schools from morning assembly (9am) till completion of the exercise (up to labeling, packaging etc.) including submission of confidential report.

This exercise has create a massive awareness among stakeholders-parents/guardians, teachers, community etc. The external evaluators are like mentor and guide of the school. They spend whole day in the school and provide quality suggestion to the school for improvement. Their presence creates a new environment in the school. The confidential report submitted by them during their visit help to formulate specific strategy for improvement of quality of the school education. A positive feeling amongst community and parents towards Govt. school system is created. Based on Gunotsav result, state has taken various initiative to improve quality education, infrastructural development etc.

The exercise has been found to have great impact on the school education scenario in the state. Immense involvement of community in school activities. Some examples of community contribution are: setting up of dining hall with furniture, installation of punching machine, construction of temporary classroom/building and addl. academic support by involving local youth etc.

It helps to increase in attendance of students and teachers. It has created a positive feeling amongst community and parents towards Govt. school system. There are cases of shifting of children from private schools to Govt. schools.

First time Gunotsav was conducted in year 2017, in which 48,868 number of schools participated, out of which 6,037(12.35%) schools achieved A+ grade, 12,927(26.45%) A, 13,636 (27.9%)B, 9,163(18.75%) C and 7,105(14.54) D. Based on the Gunotsav results, School Education Department, Govt. of Assam and District Administrations have taken number of remedial measures due to which during Gunotsav 2024, there was remarkable improvement in grading of schools. 11593(35.76%) Schools achieved A+, 14932(46.05%) A, 4603(14.20%) B, 1032(3.18%) C and 261(0.81%) D. Further 5758 schools achieved A+ for two consecutive years (Gunotsav 2023 & 2024).

Gunotsav helps to identify learning gap/s of individual child and to take remedial measures accordingly. Remedial teaching on scholastic area has been provided on weak learning outcomes focusing on C & D grade schools. Based on Gunotsav result, infrastructural development like partition wall, electrification etc. have been done.

Twinning between schools attaining A+ and A Grade with the schools attaining B & C so that the partnership can be utilized for good performing schools to support schools with specific needs and sharing of best practices.

It is an initiative to ensure greater participation of all stakeholders starting from teachers, students, administrators, communities and enhance accountability among them for quality education. Considering the importance of Gunotsav, 10% weightage of marks is considered from Gunotsav in Annual Examination and Gunotsav is included the State Academic Calendar .
